Tire Dismount Tools
- Dismounting large, tubeless tires is straightforward if you use the right tools.tire image by timur1970 from Fotolia.com
If you decide to save money by fitting a new set of tires at home, breaking the bond between a tire and rim can be very difficult without using special tools. Once the bond has been broken, smaller tires can be separated from the wheel by lubricating the rim with dish-washing liquid and dismounting the tire with a pair of tire irons. However, heavier tires require some kind of dismounting levering system. - This is a two-piece system used to mount and dismount 19.5- to 24.5-inch tubeless tires from steel and aluminum rims. The two hooks on the bead breaker or "clevis" are first set between the rim and tire, and the clevis is laid flat on the tire sidewall. The operator stands on the same side as the clevis, and kicks the tool downward and toward the rim with the heel of his shoe to break the bead. The crook/spoon end of the extended lever is placed in the matching slot on the clevis. The operator moves to the opposite side and pulls the lever back. This lifts the bead over the rim. He then lowers the spoon end of the lever down over the inside of the rim, and pulls the lever back to dismount the uppermost bead from the wheel. To dismount the lower bead without turning the tire over, the "J" end of the lever is inserted between the tire and wheel, and under the second bead. The notch on the upper end of the "J" section is placed over the flange on the rim. The operator moves to the other side of the wheel, and pulls the lever to complete the dismount.
- This compact tool consists of a 3-inch wide C-shaped casting with a large roller fitted on the outside of the C, an inch from one end of the C. A small roller is fitted to the face of the other end of the C. There is a lug protruding from the middle of the round C section designed to accept the slotted end of a long lever. The open gap of the C is placed over the rim with the small roller resting on the inside of the rim, and the large roller resting on the tire sidewall. The 1-inch-long section between the roller and the end of the C fits between the bead of the tire and the rim. A lever is slotted onto the lug and pulled toward the outside of the wheel. This forces the large roller downward to break the bead. This action is repeated around the wheel. A TNT-100 or a TNT-200 lever is used to dismount the tire. This tool has two right-angle lugs mounted on the tips of a U-shaped end of the lever; there are small rollers fitted on the ends of the lugs. On the back of the lever near the throat of the U is another small roller mounted on an inch-long lug designed to rest against the inside of the rim. The hooked rollers are forced between the tire and the rim. The roller resting on the inside of the rim acts as a fulcrum when the lever is pulled backward to dismount the tire. This action is repeated for the other side of the rim without turning the wheel over.
- The Tyrepliers dismount tool is placed straddling the rim of the wheel, and the telescoping arms are adjusted to fit the wheel size. The operator stands on the tire with one foot on the non-pivoting end of the tool. Downward pressure of his foot forces the lip of the non-pivoting end between the rim and the bead. The operator then grasps the upward-facing handles with both hands, and exerts downward pressure to force the pivoting jaws of the tool between the rim and the bead. A few heavy blows with a hammer on a protruding lug seats the pivoting jaws firmly between the rim and the bead. The operator braces the inside handle with one hand, and forces the handles open with the other. This spreads the pivoting jaws to break the bead between the rim and the tire. This action is repeated two or three times around the perimeter to break the rest of the bead. After lubricating the rim with dish-washing liquid, the tire is easily dismounted with the use of two tire irons.
