How to Choose a Living Room Set
The living room is the focal point of a home, and a place where friends and family come to congregate regularly. As such, you want a living room that you will be proud to show off but at the same time comfortable to relax in. There are a few things that need to be considered when buying living room sets in order to figure out what really fits your needs and style.
Before you think about anything else, you need to take into consideration just how big your living room is. This way, you can limit your choices to a specific size or span of furniture. Generally, you want the overall span of the furniture taking up a maximum of 2/3 of the room to make room for other appliances, tables, and walking space.
When buying furniture, it is also important to consider the quality of the material. It is always more important to focus on the quality than the quantity of how many pieces it contains. After all, furniture is not always cheap and a worthy investment could last a longer time. Generally, buying quality leather pieces will have the best sense of luxury and build quality, but it is also the most expensive. Leather quality will last the longest and be more resistant to stains, but will tear easily if mistreated. If you have active dogs or children in the house and feel like they could easily wear through leather furniture, consider buying faux or composite leather. This faux leather is easily cheaper than actual leather but you might end up replacing them every few years or so.
Another type of material is chenille furniture, which has delicate material and also has a high build quality. However, it stains and wears very easily, so it would not be great for an active household. You could also consider buying denim living room sets, which are durable but fade very easily. You will not have to replace them as often, but the color will be dead within months if continually exposed to sunlight. The best option for raucous pets and kids would be to buy a microfiber sofa, as they are the most durable, affordable, and easy to removes stains from as the material is sometimes similar to carpets.
Next, think about different styles of furniture that would be best suited to your family. Sectional sofas are a popular choice because they are extended sofas that are usually configured in an L or V shape for 5 or more people or else have a lounging chair attached to it. The sets that sectional sofas come in also have a recliner unit or reclining capabilities within the sofa itself. If your family values comfort then you should consider buying sectional sofas . However, sectional sofas tend to take up more room and are less versatile in different arrangements, as they are heavier with recliner units and breaking up sections is a hassle.
If you are thinking about a classic living room look, then the traditional sofas or even a sleeper sofa are more suitable. These types of sofas are 2 to 3 people units and are what is found in many typical family homes. If found in a living room set, the other pieces are usually not recliners and many types have furniture legs of some sort. As such, you have more freedom to move them and arrange them as you wish, and can usually be manipulated by just one person my pushing or sliding.
A sleeper sofa is an interesting choice as it contains either a slide out or foldable bed within the sofa but still retains portable dimensions when still a sofa. This is a smart choice for families with limited guest rooms or those that just wish to have a convenient bed there just in case. This would also be a great resource for those in small apartments, as having a living room doubling as a bedroom can save a lot of space and money- a common practice in apartments in expensive cities like New York.
A last consideration when buying furniture would be choosing the colors and design. Generally, unless you have a specific theme in mind for your house, you want to buy neutral colored pieces (beige, black, white, etc). Also, it is better to buy living room sets that are solid colors, without many intricate designs or patterns. This way, if you are not adept to home dcor then these are safe choices to follow.
With these items in mind, you can be better equipped to find the perfect living room set for you and your family! Have fun furniture shopping!
