Documents Needed to Travel Abroad
- The passport is the normal document required for international travel. Between the United States, Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and the Caribbean, Passport Cards (a new limited-use travel document for frequent cross-border travelers) and Enhanced Driver's Licenses (currently issued by a few states bordering Canada) are allowed in lieu of passports at land and sea border crossings. Although Passport Cards and Enhanced Driver's licenses are accepted for entry into the listed locations, they may not be accepted for entry into all countries visited by the cruise. Passengers should verify the country's specific entry requirements with the cruise line.
- Commercial airlines require all international passengers (including children and infants) to present a valid passport as part of the boarding process. That requirement serves two purposes:
1. It assures that the traveler has the proper identification document necessary to attempt entry into destination country.
2. A valid passport is necessary for entry or re-entry into the United States. - Although Western European countries do not require entry visas for individuals carrying United States passports, many countries do. Countries also may require proof of onward or return tickets and sufficient funds for the stay. All travelers should refer to the referenced U.S. State Department website for country specific entry requirements before beginning the trip.
- Countries require declaration or entry cards along with passports and visas. These cards are usually available on the inbound flight or at the immigration and customs area. Generally the cards ask the purpose of the visit, length of stay and information about items being brought into the country.
- United States passports are valuable. If the destination country requires the passport to be carried at all times, carry it close to the body and be aware of pick pockets. If the passport is left in the hotel, make certain it is placed in the hotel safe or a safe place in the room. It is advisable to photocopy the main page of the passport and keep the copy separate from the passport book. If the passport is lost or stolen, report to the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate with the photocopy.
