    • 1). Scrub the outside of the hard hat with a mixture of 2 cups of hot water, 1 tbsp. of dish soap and 1 tbsp. of white vinegar to clean the surface. Rinse and dry the hard hat when all dirt, grease and other grime is removed.

    • 2). Place the hard hat outdoors on a layer of newspaper.

    • 3). Paint the hard hat with gold spray paint designed for use on plastic surfaces. Apply one coat of the spray paint, let it dry, and then apply a second coat of paint.

    • 4). Measure a 2-inch-wide stripe that extends from the front center of the hard hat to the back of the hard hat. Mark this stripe lightly with a pencil.

    • 5). Apply 1/2-inch-wide painter's tape along the outer edges of the stripe you created.

    • 6). Paint the stripe with white latex paint using a small paintbrush. Wait for the paint to dry and then apply a second coat if necessary to completely cover the gold paint.

    • 7). Dry the hard hat overnight to ensure the white paint is completely dry.

    • 8). Place a strip of 1/2-inch-wide painter's tape onto the center of the white stripe on the hard hat. Center it perfectly so the exposed white stripes on either side of the tape are the same width.

    • 9). Paint the exposed parts of the white stripe with black latex paint and a paintbrush. Apply a second coat if necessary and let the paint dry completely.

    • 10

Peel off the tape carefully to reveal a white stripe with black edges.

    • 11

Tape a fleur de lis stencil to the side of the hard hat.

    • 12

Tap black paint onto the stencil with a stencil brush using an up and down motion. Wait for the paint to dry and then remove the stencil.

    • 13

Paint a thin white line onto the fleur de lis close to the outer edge with a small paintbrush. Leave the outer black edge of the fleur de lis exposed so the symbol will appear to have an inner white border and an outer black border.

Repeat steps 11 through 13 on the opposite side of the hard hat.
