How to Eradicate Black Mold in Cotton
- 1). Put on rubber gloves, safety goggles, protective disposable clothing and an N95 dust mask before touching the moldy item.
- 2). Pour 2 tbsp. of liquid laundry bleach, if cotton is white, into a clean bucket. Add 1 quart warm water. For colored cotton, use peroxygen bleach instead, at a rate of 2 tbsp. per pint of water.
- 3). Dip a clean sponge in the bucket. Sponge the mixture over the cotton. Allow it to remain for 15 minutes, if using chlorine bleach, and 30 minutes, if using peroxygen bleach.
- 4). Rinse the cotton item. If it is able to fit into a washing machine, rinse it there -- otherwise, wet a clean sponge and rub it over the item to rinse.
- 5). Run machine-washable items through a wash cycle in your machine, using laundry detergent, and dry the item in your clothes dryer.
- 6). Discard or sanitize -- with the bleach and water mixture -- all items that contacted the moldy cotton.
