How to Print Murals
- 1). Measure the surface or wall for the mural carefully. Remember that walls are seldom square, so use the larger of the dimensions for width and height.
- 2). Select a crisp, high-quality, high-resolution photograph or illustration, or use your favorite graphics software to create one. Avoid images with too much fine detail, with muted colors or with low contrast because they will not hold up well when enlarged or may look "washed out."
- 3). Use the image editing software of your choice to crop the image to match the proportions of the measurements you took for the wall or surface where the mural will go so the image will enlarge properly. Also adjust contrast, saturation and color balance if necessary.
- 4). Experiment with free or inexpensive special effects software, such as Be Funky to manipulate images into posterizations, painting and drawing simulations, Pop Art and similar stylized options. These may produce more pleasing and dramatic results than just enlarging a photo. Most programs of this type are available free online, so you don't have to download them to your machine.
- 1). Download and install one of the many free or inexpensive poster/mural generation software programs such as Yotta Print or Pro Poster, or pick an online equivalent such as Block Posters. These programs let you enter dimensions for a mural of any size. They then divide the image into overlapping sections you can print on standard 8.5 x 11 inch paper, paste together and trim to form the finished mural.
- 2). Enter the dimensions of your desired finished mural into the software.
- 3). Upload your edited image into the software, and preview the image. Make any final cropping or other adjustments as required.
- 4). Select the option to print the image to the size of the mural. The software will calculate how many sheets of paper you will need for the completed mural.
- 5). Insert the specified number of sheets of photo or similar paper into an inkjet printer, and check your ink supply. Print out the pages to make the mural image.
- 1). Select a vendor with products appropriate for your mural project. Large graphic output vendors offer inkjet type printing on plain and laminated paper, fabric and plain adhesive or cloth backed vinyl, all with varying warranties on the colorfastness of the image. Most can output to any length, but the width depends on their equipment and the material for it. Mural companies have software that divides the output into segmented sections, which allows for murals of any size.
- 2). Note the specifications required for production, including dimensions, acceptable file sizes and types and recommended resolutions.
- 3). Enter these specifications into your image editing or graphics software. Modify your chosen image as required, and create the appropriate files.
- 4). Upload the image or graphics file to the vendor's web site, and preview the image. Use the vendor utilities to make any final modifications, and approve the image for production.
- 5). Confirm the material to be used for the final product, the dimensions and all other details, including shipping and delivery. Specify payment options, and order the mural.
