How to Deal With Hoarders

The show €Hoarders€ isn't an easy one to watch. Mainly it's because it's a show that obviously highlights a mental disorder, but also because people understand why there are certain people who just can't bear to part with their possessions. At some level, anyone can relate to these hoarders, especially when certain items have significance to them. Perhaps you still have the tab of the soda you had during that memorable first date, or even the concert ticket to your favourite band's show. There are some things that you just can't let go that easily, and so at some point you can identify with the hoarders on the show.

But even if you're not on the same level as the show's hoarders, you may still be the type of person to cling to old possessions and create a clutter problem. This means that you may not be a typical hoarder, but you still find it difficult to get rid of things you no longer use. When you see yourself exhibiting such behaviour, it's definitely time to take action.

In order to fight this clutter problem and your growing tendency to €hoard€, you may want to think about the emotional connection that's stopping you from letting go. To do this, you will want to have the guidance of an actual professional. Some people have this mistaken notion that they're admitting to a weakness or a mental disorder when they start seeing psychologists. That's not true. It's simply the recognition of certain concerns bothering you and asking an expert to look into the matter. It's the logical thing to do.

Once you decide on actually letting go of some of your possessions, it's a good idea to prepare yourself by bringing in some moral support. Trying to purge your stash can be difficult without a friend helping you through it. Your resolve could weaken, or you start looking at some things and figure you'll find a way to use them eventually - this is a cop out that will not help reduce the clutter in your home. Your friend will be the objective voice of reason while you get rid of clutter.

If you need motivation, you can always see this as the chance to donate your old things. A lot of people are apprehensive about throwing their old possessions away. On a certain level, people see it as wasteful. However, if you're donating them, then you see it as breathing new life to old things and letting other people benefit from things you no longer use. Obviously, this isn't always applicable (such as if your clutter consists of Cheetos wrappers, in which case there's obviously a bigger problem in play). But, if it does work, you'll be able to motivate yourself to get rid of your clutter much more easily.

At this point you may wonder if you're really a hoarder. Just because you own a lot of things doesn't automatically make you a hoarder. Talking to a professional will help you see whether or not you're showing hoarder behaviour. Maybe you're just eager to keep the things you own.

Should you be able to ensure that you're not a hoarder, you can now look towards a different problem, namely storage space. To solve this you will need a portable storage building. It's easy to get a portable storage building because it's rare that you'll be required to get building permits since these are portable and temporary buildings anyway. Store the things you don't use in the portable storage building.
