However, average salaries that medical assistants earn in Miami are increasing. For example, as of May 2011, medical assistants working in Miami earned approximately $44,000 per year.

    What Florida Medical Assistants Earn

    • Medical assistants in Florida earned an average annual salary of $28,780, as of May 2009. Medical assistants earned hourly wages ranging from $13.48 to $13.84 per hour. Annual salaries varied by city. For example, Gainesville employers paid their medical assistants $27,070 a year, while assistants working in the Orlando area earned $28,550 a year. Jacksonville's medical assistants were paid $28,680 a year, close to the state's average, making Miami the highest-paying area for medical assistants of the four cities.

    Job Growth

    • Even though many health care professions are expected to realize significant job growth from 2008 to 2018, medical assistants are expected to see some of the largest amounts of job growth. The BLS reports that jobs for medical assistants are expected to grow by 34 percent over the next decade. Technological advances, larger numbers of aging Americans and a continued focus on health care services and costs are expected to fuel much of the job growth.
