Alternative to Mini Blinds in Campers

    Bamboo

    • Blinds made from bamboo grass are a good option from an environmental perspective. Renewable and sustainable, bamboo is a grass that grows very fast---up to a meter in a day! If you want a natural or exotic look for your RV décor, then you might appreciate the organic appearance of bamboo. Available in various styles, from matchstick to slats, bamboo can be cut into various shapes for different looks. Unlined bamboo blinds offer privacy while letting through some filtered light. With a lining, they can be room darkening, a plus for sleeping areas or TV viewing. For more information on styling and bamboo ecology, see "Bamboo Blinds: the Basics," in the Resources.

    Window Film

    • Special plastic films for covering camper windows are available at building and home supply stores. These films come in an array of patterns and styles. They give a clean, minimalist look to your small windows. Some are designed to solve issues of privacy, while others insulate the interior of your RV from heat, cold and damaging solar UV rays. Installation is straightforward; clean the window, cut the film, and apply it. Full instructions accompany the packaged film. You can see images and instructions online also.

Jeffrey S. Drilling wrote of his use of film to cover his home-built camper, at mybigadventure.com: "Installation was pretty simple. Just cut out the plastic film to match the shape of the window, spray the window and plastic with water, and then apply. Once applied to the inside of the window, I used a flat surface (credit card) to push out all the air bubbles."

    Curtains

    • For softening hard edges of RV windows, and adding personal style to your RV window treatments, fabric curtains are hard to beat. Curtains can be simple and inexpensive or custom made---pricey and elegant. If you are on a budget, consider making your own. There are some no-sew alternatives that make the project quite simple. Choose a fabric that reflects your idea of camping or RV life. Prints featuring animals, trees, clouds or boats might be fun. Solids in easy-care fabrics might add a subtle softness and give you the privacy you desire.
Spring rods at the top and bottom prevent curtains from swinging, and protect your privacy in the bedroom or bathroom. Tiebacks allow flexibility for day and night use. If you have a large window, café curtains---open at the top and covering just the lower half of the window---are a good compromise, offering privacy while letting you enjoy the view.

The window covering that you choose will depend on your design tastes, budget and practical needs. Think about how it looks from the outside and the inside. Does the curtain need a liner to amp up the insulation factor? Should you combine film for sun protection with a gathered fabric swag to cozy the look?
