    • 1). Contact an asbestos inspector in your area to test for the presence of asbestos-containing materials. It is very important to have any exposed asbestos removed before beginning a remodeling project.

    • 2). Go through your home with a pad of paper and a pen. List all of the things that you want to change in each room, and outside as well. Write down each thing, big and small so that you have an accurate "to do" list.

    • 3). Measure each room's dimensions with a tape measure. Use graph paper to create a rough blueprint of the layout of your home. Use each square on the graph to represent one square foot of floor space.

    • 4). Mark on the blueprint where each permanent fixture sits. Include cabinets, closets, doors, windows, sinks and tubs or showers. Measure these items and draw them onto the graph paper to scale.

    • 5). Order new flooring for the rooms in which you decided flooring needed to be redone. Choose your colors according to the design style you plan on using for the room. Use your measurements to order the correct amount of flooring.

    • 6). Use the measurements for your cabinetry and other permanent fixtures to order new ones if you marked it down on your list. Consider quality, construction and style of the new fixtures so that they fit in your budget.
