What to Wear for an Alaskan Cruise in May?
- Alaska has several climate zones, each exhibiting different climate patterns. The Southern Zone experiences daily averages of 54 degrees F in May and drops to 39 degrees F during the evenings. The Southeastern Coastal Zone and the Southwestern Zone have a similar climate pattern to the Southern Zone but the Southeastern Coastal can receive several inches of rainfall in May. Both the SCZ and the Southwestern Zone can reach into the upper 70s, but these temperatures are only occasional. The coldest region is the North Arctic Zone. The temperature rarely reaches over 24 degrees F, and nighttime often drops well below zero.
- Variety is the spice of life, and variety is the key to packing for an Alaskan cruise in May. Obviously, an important block of your time will be spent outside, viewing the landscape that has made Alaska world famous. Bring clothes for layering. Thermal, long-sleeved shirts, T-shirts and windbreakers should be the basis of your wardrobe. Thermal shirts can be worn over T-shirts and can be removed as needed. In 50-degree weather, a thick winter coat is not necessary. A windbreaker is adequate. Jeans and khaki pants are ideal in Alaska during May. Gloves, wool hats and scarves are good items to bring for extra warmth. A stop to the North Arctic zone is almost always on a cruise itinerary. Glaciers, snow-capped mountains and the unique Alaskan wildlife can be seen in full glory. Pack a thick winter coat, sweat pants, boots and extra-thick socks. You may not be able to remain long out in the freezing temperatures, but with these clothes you can withstand the cold long enough to take in the sights.
- A major part of your cruise will be spent indoors. Fortunately, the cruise ship's temperature does not drop to the lower 20s at night. Bring clothes suitable for the indoor climate. T-shirts, light, long-sleeved shirts, jeans and shorts will be staples while you are in the climate-controlled areas of the ship. Bring at least three sets of sleep wear, whether you prefer pajamas, nightgowns or short and tank top sets, having adequate sleepwear can help the comfort level of your cruise. Often times, cruises host formal dinner nights. Men should bring a formal suite, and women should bring a cocktail dress, formal shoes and accessories.
