How to Add a Second Hard Drive to a Dell PowerEdge 400SC
- 1). Shut down the computer and turn off the monitor. Unplug the power cord, monitor cable and any other cords or cables connected to the ports on the rear panel. Place the computer on a stable work surface with the right side panel facing upwards.
- 2). Examine the top and bottom panels of the computer case and press the cover release buttons located near the rear edge of each panel. Lift the cover upwards and open it completely. Inspect the interior of the case cover and locate the attached drive bays.
- 3). Find the hard drive installed in one of the bays. Push in the ends of the hard drive rails. Slide the hard drive free of the drive bay and then move it down to the bay below. Push the hard drive into the bay until it locks into place.
- 4). Examine the exterior of the hard drive that you wish to install. Find the label illustrating the various jumper-setting options. Locate the jumpers on the rear panel of the hard drive. Configure the jumpers to match the setting labeled "CS" or "cable."
- 5). Align the holes on the hard drive rails with the holes on the sides of the hard drive. Position the rails so that the tabs on the ends protrude from the rear of the hard drive. Use the screws packaged with the rails to secure them to the sides of the drive.
- 6). Insert the hard drive into the bay above the already-installed drive. Trace the cable leading from the first hard drive and locate the unused connector. Plug the connector and a power supply cable into the matching ports on the back of the hard drive.
- 7). Close the cover on the computer case. Push down on the rear edge of the cover until you feel a click. Return the computer to its original location and reconnect all cords and cables.
