How to Protect Sunflower Seeds
- 1). Cut pantyhose or cheesecloth into sections twice as large as your sunflower blooms.
- 2). Cover the sunflower blossom with the cheesecloth or pantyhose to completely encase the flower and protect the seeds from birds.
- 3). Tie the covering around the stem of the flower with string to hold it in place.
- 4). Leave the sunflower cover on until the flower petals turn brown and the head begins to droop.
- 5). Cut the stem two inches below the flower and leave the pantyhose or cheesecloth in place during drying.
- 6). Hang the flowers upside down in a cool place to dry until the head feels brittle when squeezed, about one week. Remove the covering and break the head apart to release the sunflower seeds inside for using.
