    Fans

    • High-powered fans are used to draw moisture away from moldy surfaces. By using them in conjunction with open windows, you can weaken toxic mold colonies with improved air circulation. Because mold thrives on moisture, your most powerful tools create a drier environment.

    Dehumidifier

    • Like fans, a portable dehumidifier attacks mold by eliminating the moisture that the spores require. Whereas fans draw moisture outward, a dehumidifier draws moisture inward, pulling it away from walls and other surfaces to dramatically reduce the amount of relative humidity in the room.

    Protective Garments

    • When dealing up close with toxic mold, you must always wear a protective breathing mask. Toxic mold spores present health risks as they enter the airways and begin polluting the lungs, and prolonged exposure increases these risks. If you plan to work with bleach or chemical fungicides, you will also need to wear latex or rubber gloves and protective goggles.

    Bleach

    • Bleach is one of the most powerful chemical weapons used against toxic mold colonies. While oxygen bleach (as well as the similar hydrogen peroxide) can kill some spores, chlorine bleach destroys and disinfects. Because chlorine bleach has toxic qualities of its own, you will need to dilute it with water (about 1/4 or 1/2 cup to a gallon of water) before applying it directly to your delicate household surfaces.

    Ammonia

    • Ammonia is just as effective as bleach when combating mold, according to Reader's Digest. Unlike bleach, though, ammonia is natural and safer for the environment. As with bleach, you should always dilute clear ammonia with water before applying. Depending on the sensitivity of the surface and the amount of toxic mold present, you may need as much as 1 cup of ammonia per gallon of water, or as little as 2 tbsp. of ammonia per gallon of water.

    Spray Bottles

    • When applying a liquid solution to a black mold colony, you must never pour the ingredients directly over the mold. This will merely soak your porous material and potentially lead to permanent damage (in addition to ensuring that mold returns, since excess moisture attracts mold). By using a spray bottle or garden sprayer, you can mist your solution onto your surfaces, maintaining total control over the amount of liquid that you distribute.
