Churches in San Francisco and Their Social Obligations

Scott McKenzie immortalized himself and San Francisco when he sang "If you are going to San Francisco..." He implored the visitors to wear flowers in their hair because love was in the air. That about sums up the sentiments about the city of San Francisco: a gentle city peopled by gentle folk. Ironically, it is also home to Alcatraz, the now-defunct maximum security prison which is the romanticized subject of many a movie.

There is a considerable Chinese population present in 'Frisco. In fact, we start off with the Chinese Church of the Nazarene which you can find at 912 Greenwich Street. Sunday is a busy day with Sunday school meant for all age groups and worship that follows it. School and service are from 9.45 a.m. to 12.15 noon. The service is in English and not in Chinese.

There are at least six apostolic churches in 'Frisco located at various parts of the city, with their stress on the apostles and their ministries. The "Glad Tidings church" is a grand old structure and is affiliated with Assemblies of God. "The Mission Bay Community Church" at 32 Ocean Avenue has a reputation of being a young people's church.

"Grace Cathedral" is the home of one of the only seven Episcopal choirs in the land. Founded in 1849, it is a major tourist destination for Christian as well as other admirers of architecture. "St. Peter and Paul Church" at 666 Filbert Street is a marvel of finely chiseled intricate designs of architecture. The cornerstone Church at 3459, 17th Street promises good music and informal approach to God. Saturday service is at 7 pm and on Sunday there are three services at 9.00, 10.30 and 12 pm.

There are hundreds of Protestant as well as Catholic Churches spread around the city. Are they all only places of worship? No, the burgeoning discontent in couples growing day by day given the economic and social upheavals, counseling has become quite necessary. What better place than an abode of God to do it? And, with the respected priests for counselors, or trained professionals to do the deed under the benevolent eyes of the priests, the job is half done. There are hundreds of counselors doing their duty by the society and doing what they can to keep marriages intact. In fact, every church, small or big, has a counselor or a team of counselors attached to it.

The licensed therapists lay more emphasis on the ways of God and keep the Biblical doctrines as their reference points while at the same time incorporating the current thinking and trends into the therapy. All the counselors are aware that a marriage wow is not something to be taken lightly of and they try their best to save a marriage that is on the rocks. Young people too need counseling in the times of frivolity and permissiveness. So, hundreds of young souls are going to these counselors and have been saved by the therapists in the city.
