How to Change Ink Cartridges in Printers

    • 1). Purchase the correct ink cartridge for your printer. To find out what that is, read the printer's user guide. Some printers operate with two ink cartridges; others require at least six.

    • 2). Turn on your printer before attempting to change the ink cartridge. Several lights will flash to notify you that the ink is low. Print a test page to verify that the ink is running low. If the colors are washed out or missing from the test page, you'll know it's definitely time to change the ink cartridge.

    • 3). Open the printer cover and pull the ink cartridge release lever toward you to remove the existing cartridges. Dispose of these empty ink cartridges by carefully placing them in a plastic bag or napkin. Although the cartridges are mostly empty, there are still remnants of ink that will spill out. If you'd rather not throw the ink cartridges away, there are online companies that will pay you to recycle them.

    • 4). Press gently to insert a new ink cartridge into each slot. They should snap into place; they don't have to be forced into the slots. Be sure that the color of the cartridge matches the color of the slot. If you mistakenly insert an ink cartridge into the wrong position, you may damage your printer and cause it to stop working permanently.

    • 5). Close the printer cover. Within a few seconds, the printer will begin to perform a few diagnostic checks. If the cartridges have been inserted incorrectly, the printer will notify you of this by flashing lights. Print a final test page to confirm that the ink cartridges have been correctly changed. If everything has been completed the right way, the colors on the test page will appear correctly.
