Brief Description On Neyyar Dam Sanctuary
Neyyar Dam Sanctuary is a popular sanctuary that was declared long time back to 1958 among the Forest Animal Lifestyle in Keralam. Nothing much was done here by the Wildlife Department of Kerala but when a separate wildlife wing was set here, conservasation of wildlife slowly got momentum here. The Neyyar Dam is a drainage basin for the Neyyar River and its tributaries Mullar and Kallar.
Location
Neyyar Dam Sanctuary is located beautifully on the foot of the Western Ghats, somewhat at a distance of 30 kilometers east of Trivandrum.

Weather Condition
Weather Condition at Neyyar Dam Sanctuary is hot and humid during the summer season and during the summer season temperature is around 35 degree Celsius. The sanctuary receives both rain falls from South West Monsoon and North east monsoon between Octobers to November around 2800 mm. So the ideal visiting time for the tourists here to Neyyar Dam Sanctuary is from November to March.
Flora and Fauna
Neyyar Dam Sanctuary is rich in flora and fauna. It is home to various species of birds, animals and plants making it to the list of most popular wildlife sanctuary in Kerala. There are around 39 species of animals including Tiger, Elephant, Sambhar, Nilgiri Langur and Nilgiri Tahr. A crocodile farm has been set up in this sanctuary and there are around 20 mugger crocodiles.
There is also a Neyyar Elephant Rehabilation Centre complex where the calves of the elephants as well as the grown up elephants are take care off. One can also enjoy Elephant Feeding and elephant safari here.
Note: The administrative complex of the Neyyar wildlife sanctuary is located at a distance of 1 kms west of Neyyar Dam and there is rest house, hostel, and information center. One who visits the sanctuary can enjoy not just the rich flora and fauna inside the sanctuary but also enjoy boating facilities as well as visit to the Lion Park.
Dressing: Do not wear bright colored cloths as they alert the animals, rather wear light cotton cloth as inside the sanctuary it will get hot and humid. Don"t forget to carry first aid box, binoculars, cameras and put trekking shoes.
