How to Discourage Woodchucks From Your Yard

    • 1). Fence the area with 4-foot mesh wire fencing with mesh openings of an inch or less (which is commonly referred to as hardware cloth). Place steel fence posts every 10 feet around the perimeter of the yard. Dig a trench a 1 foot deep along the fence line before setting the hardware cloth into the trench. Attach the wire to the posts and fill in the trench to prevent the woodchucks from digging under the wire.

    • 2). Tie strips of scrap cloth to the hardware cloth. A 2- or 3-inch-wide strip every 10 or 12 feet should be sufficient. Place the cloth strips about halfway up the exposed portion of the fence.

    • 3). Attach electric fencing insulators to the posts about 5 inches above the ground. Place an electric-fence wire through the insulators and connect to an electric-fence charger. The electric-fence wire discourages the woodchuck from climbing up the fence.

    • 4). Soak the rags on the fence with predator urine. Concentrated urine of natural predators, including bobcat urine, is commercially available for use as an animal repellent. Replace the urine on the rags about every two weeks, or after any heavy rain.
