Carriers Can"t Carry
Back in school I was told the story behind menstruation.
The blood that comes out each month is in fact a potential baby's bed for nine months inside the mother's womb in case an egg manages to get fertilized.
Irrespective of the number of children a woman gives birth to, whether or not she becomes a mother at all...
an average female has to deal with all that menstruation entails for minimum of 25 years, month after month...
(that some men call monthly periods dirty and thereby women who menstruate dirty is something I will ignore for the time being) When a woman does indeed conceive it is she who must take care of herself and the baby growing inside each day of the nine months...
and though creating a whole new life inside you is an amazing feeling, period of pregnancy may not necessarily be amazing, given the games hormones play during that phase...
not to mention the risks to health and life itself.
Childbirth is known to be a challenging and painful experience despite the immense joy a mother may feel once the baby is actually out...
It is the woman who must feed the child and attend to his/her most basic needs every now and then.
It is the woman whose body, mind and life undergo a drastic change each time she becomes a mother.
There is no dearth of literature and messages from the media, family, society, religious texts etc.
that socialize women into believing that motherhood is the only thing that will ever make them complete and their lives meaningful...
It is largely a mother's responsibility to raise a child and inculcate the right values in him/her.
It is the mother who must balance her love for her kids and love for her career...
the delicate balance between personhood and motherhood is very hard to maintain for most women...
Mothers must carry out the responsibility of child-bearing and child-rearing.
Mothers must carry the burden of guilt, suffer feelings of inadequacy and be judged by others if they "fail" in this responsibility.
then I ask not so humbly...
WHY must mothers not be allowed to CARRY the family name? Why does the man suddenly emerge from the oblivion to attach his surname to that of the child's so that HE may carry the family name further? and God forbid if it is a girl she is of course not welcome...
coz though she may again carry a baby when she grows old but she will never be able to CARRY the family name!!!
