    • 1). Add conditioner to the water if the mattress will be stored for several months. Add 4 to 6 ounces to the water one week before you drain the mattress. That way, it can get circulated around. The conditioner will help protect the inside from bacteria and mold.

    • 2). Drain the waterbed mattress completely before you store it. Strip the bedding and unplug the heater first. The most typical way to drain the water is to run a garden hose from the bed out a window and away from the building. Attach the hose to the valve in the mattress. Press on the mattress to help push the water out. This step will probably take a couple hours.

    • 3). Wipe the entire waterbed mattress with a towel and a vinyl cleaner. Wipe the excess cleaner off with a clean towel. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to get the best results. The cleaner will help protect the outside of the mattress while it's being stored.

    • 4). Roll the top end of the waterbed mattress down to store it. Keep rolling it down until you reach the end. Lift the mattress out of the frame. Place it in a cardboard box and close it up. You may want to ask someone to help you.

    • 5). Place the box in an area where the temperature and humidity level is controlled. Extreme climates will damage the mattress.
