The ABCs of Training a Golden Retriever A Golden Retriever puppy could probably be a common choice for someone thinking of raising a pet because of its carefree and affectionate character.
These characteristics have been synonymous to this breed which is why some people think that dog training is not necessary.
It should be noted, however, that despite the positive traits of this popular family dog, proper domestication is also essential.
Golden Retrievers are known to be highly trainable by picking-up a command easily.
The Name Game First and foremost, a Golden Retriever should be familiar with its name.
As frequently as possible, use its name when calling its attention from day one onwards.
If the dog does not know its name, chances are, it will not follow its master's commands.
Dog Training: The Basic Commands In order to have a well-behaved dog in the household, it is a must for every owner to know the basic commands.
Not only will a disciplined pet bring pleasure to its master but it will also not be a problem to everyone else around.
Listed below are the ABCs of canine obedience: · Sit - Hold a piece of dog biscuit above the Golden Retriever's nose.
Move the treat backwards in a slow manner.
Simultaneously, its head will also move backwards until its hind legs fold down to a sitting position.
At that instant, clearly call the command "Sit!" Use "Sit!" before giving the puppy its food in order to avoid clutter, most especially if there are other dogs around.
It is also useful in leashing and while waiting to cross the street.
· Lie Down - Dog training Golden Retrievers to lie down should not be a challenging job.
Same as in "Sit!" a piece of dog biscuit is used to encourage the dog's movement.
Move the piece of doggy treat vertically downwards towards the floor.
The puppy's head will follow the direction of the biscuit downward until it moves its front paws forward assuming a lying position.
Precisely call "Lie down!" or "Lay!" at that moment.
"Lie down" can be used when a dog is boisterous.
This can make the mutt all quiet and well-behaved.
· Come - Golden Retrievers are regarded as one of the smartest dogs in the world which is why calling the dog to come is no sweat.
Two persons are needed in dog training for this command.
One will hold the leash while the other will move away and call "Come!" As soon as "Come!" has been given, the puppy is let free to go to the master.
This is particularly useful when the dog is wandering on its own while it is off the leash.
When properly trained, it will go back to its master as soon as the command is given.
· Stay - A Golden Retriever would learn how to stay regardless if it's in a sitting or a lying position.
Call "Stay!" and then move back one step.
The puppy should not follow.
However, if it does, patiently put it back to its starting position without displaying anger.
The most common use of this command is when the dog rides in a car.
When a car door opens, it is almost automatic for a puppy to jump out although it is not called.
Calling "Stay!" would give the message to stay put.
Important Dog Training Notes Make sure to repeat these exercises a few times in order for the puppy to associate its action with the instruction.
Always be generous in giving rewards and at the same time, give punishment at the instant it is needed.
Never delay either a reward or a punishment because this will only confuse the dog which is acceptable and which is not.
Remember that while it is great to know the basics, it is still helpful for both the dog and the master to attend an obedience class.
The Golden Choice Investing the time and effort to care for a Golden Retriever brings fulfilling rewards.
It is undeniably one of the most affectionate dogs having great socialization skills with children.
Living up to its nature to please its master, you will be surprised with the hundred and one ways it does.
