    • 1). Review your current job situation. Determine what aspects of your career that you are satisfied with and what aspects you can improve or expand. Analyze your feelings about your current job, decide if you would like to stay in your industry or pursue a different industry entirely.

    • 2). List your short- and long-term goals. Consider your skills, talents, hobbies and interests; determine if you are using your skill sets in your current position. Compare your everyday job responsibilities against your skill sets; determine how you would like to improve or remove unnecessary responsibilities. Review your short-term goals and compare it to your current responsibilities.

For example, if you are a Human Resources Clerk and you would like to become a HR Generalist in two years, list how you can accomplish those goals, such as by taking on more responsibilities or participating in special projects.

    • 3). Assign a time frame. It's essential that you assign a time frame for each goal to help you focus on your goals. Some of your goals can be completed within months; some may take years and you may have to receive additional training. Remember, even completing the small steps towards your bigger goals is a step in the right direction.

    • 4). Be specific with each goal. Writing down the process for each step will keep you focused on your goals and the process you need to complete each step. Research classes, webinars, and seminars in your industry; the additional training will assist you in your career. Additionally, if you are currently employed, research any tuition reimbursement or seminars your company offers. Also, speak with your manager about your career goal; she may be able to assist you in getting to the next step.

    • 5). Complete your goals for each year. As you complete each goal cross it off of your list and add it to your resume. Always keep your eyes open for available opportunities at your current company or elsewhere.
