Afzal Khan was the Prime Minister in the court of Mughal emperor - Shah Jahan and was given the title of Mulla Shukrullah Shirazi. This monument is beautifully decorated with glazed tiles and brown stones and is believed to be the only monument with Persian architecture. There are numerous Islamic inscriptions which are carved on the tomb walls. It is also known for the detailed artwork done by the skilled craftsmen of that era. As per the monuments records, this mausoleum was built by Afzal Khan himself, who had keen interest in building monuments in Agra.

As per archaeologists, the mausoleum was a three-storied structure and had two main gates - in North and South directions. A lot of visitors are drawn by the colorful tiles and stones on roof, balconies and brackets.
