Steph re-enters Kayla’s room and finds that her mother is missing. Nurse Maxine enters, where Steph insists that they need to find Kayla. Maxine proceeds to alert the staff and fetch Dr. Carver. Lexie and Roman arrive, where Steph informs them that she went to fetch Kayla some juice, then Kayla was gone. Maxine reveals that an orderly saw Kayla in Bo’s room. “She’s being a doctor first, a patient second,” theorizes Roman.
Meanwhile, someone disguised as a hospital staff member snaps a picture of Stephanie on his camera phone. Steph insists that they need to get Kayla back into her room. Roman and Lexie agree to let Kayla have a visit with Bo. Roman advises Steph to give her mom some space. Lexie gets paged and assures Steph that they will have Kayla back in her room resting soon. Steph thanks Lexie and apologizes for freaking out earlier. Roman proposes buying Steph a cup of coffee and letting Bo and Kayla visit while Steph tells him all about her internship with Anna. The mysterious person continues to lurk nearby with his picture of Steph.
At Ava’s compound, Dr. Neusbaum arrives for another therapy session. He notes that Ava seems tense and suspects that Ava’s hiding something, as Angelo was acting strangely too. He proposes having a look around. Ava challenges the doctor to go right ahead. The doctor then suggests picking up where they left off and reassures her that their sessions are kept in the strictest confidence.
Ava wonders why she’s not better. “Healing is a process,” he affirms. “Okay, Dr. Phil,” quips Ava. He then asks if she’s been taking her medication. “Like clockwork,” she responds. He suggests increasing the dosage, since she’s on edge and more argumentative than usual. She claims she’s always argumentative and apologizes for her behavior, using the excuse that she’s tired of being locked up and just wants to have fun again. Dr. Neusbaum proposes that she explain why she’s working so hard to distract him from the tension in the house. Ava explains that the tension in the house is because she’s pressuring her cousins to let her out of there. She complains how her daddy keeps her cut off from the outside world. Dr. Neusbaum states that it’s for the best. As they begin their session, the doctor asks if she remembers something that happened right before she was supposed to marry Patch. Ava gets upset and says she can’t remember. The doctor gives her two pills, insisting that it will help her relax so she can remember everything that her subconscious may be repressing.
Dr. Neusbaum later asks Ava is she’s feeling better and encourages her to just relax and let the memories come naturally. A distressed Ava can’t remember anything and wonders why she’s repressing her memories. Dr. Neusbaum theorizes that the memories are too upsetting or traumatic for her and surmises that it has something to do with Patch and the result of trauma she suffered after he left. Ava cries and fears that she’ll never have the answers. Dr. Neusbaum comforts a distraught Ava and assures her that they’ll keep working until they find the answers together. He believes they can stop for today and encourages Ava to take a little nap and to keep taking her pills. After he leaves, Ava calls for Angelo and reveals that she told the shrink exactly what he needed to hear so he would get out of there. She tells him to go get Patch.
Meanwhile, Hope tries to find a way out of Ava’s room. Steve knocks on the outside window and explains that the alarms on the windows go off if they’re opened but not if they’re broken. He hides while Hope turns the music up loud. Angelo barges in the room and demands for her to turn it down. “Don’t make me come over there,” he warns. She complies and he exits. She then breaks the window and throws a blanket down as Steve helps her out. They make it on the ground and make a beeline out of there. As Steve attempts to help Hope over the wall of the fortress, they are stopped by one of Ava’s guards with a gun. The guard orders the two to put their hands up. Steve knocks the goon to the ground and attempts to help Hope over the wall again. Angelo and another goon appear and order the duo to freeze, otherwise they’re dead. He orders them to turn around and put their hands on the wall. The other goon takes Steve’s gun and calls for assistance. Angelo orders them to put their hands on their heads, slowly turn around, and head back to the house. He reminds Patch how he hates him for what he did to Ava and dares Steve to give him a reason to shoot him.
One of Ava’s guards enters her room. The guard reveals that the rooms were empty and the windows were smashed out, but Angelo and the guys are looking for Patch and “Kayla.” A panicked Ava yells for him to find them now.
Angelo brings a defeated Steve and Hope back to Ava’s room. Angry Ava asks how they could do this to her after how well she’s treated them. An appalled Hope disagrees on how well she’s treated them, reminding Ava that she’s holding them prisoner. Ava orders Angelo to leave them alone, then confronts Steve for lying to him. Steve tries to convince Ava that he still has feelings for her, but she doesn’t believe it and questions why he was trying to escape with “Kayla.” Steve reminds Ava that “Kayla” is pregnant and thus he was trying to keep her safe. Hope claims that she doesn’t want to be with a man who is clearly in love with another woman. She tries to convince Ava that Steve never really wanted the baby, which Steve confirms. Ava believes that Steve would say just about anything to get her to let “Kayla” go. She proposes having her guards get rid of "Kayla." Steve tells Ava that he still loves her, but refuses to let her threaten “Kayla.” Ava denies threatening her and claims she would just have her cousins take her away so they could talk. She suggests having some dinner with him, which he agrees to. Angelo knocks on the door with a phone, stating that something just came for her. Ava gloats about an “insurance policy” she has her hands on and displays a picture of Stephanie. She threatens to kill Stephanie if they try and escape again.
