There are certain medications that may be used to treat pain.
These drugs could be described in various ways including their specific use or the specific types of pain that are targeted with these drugs.
Some types of pain occur when we have a bruise or a cut and may require some over-the-counter medication to provide temporary relief.
However, there are also stronger levels of medications that could be more appropriate for really severe or chronic types of pain.
A doctor may prescribe some of these drugs which are not readily available through over-the-counter methods.
Drugs can be effective for providing relief from pain and the following are two main categories of drugs that could be used to treat pain.
1.
Over-the-counter medication.
These are drugs that do not need a doctor's prescription.
Hence, any adult could probably walk into any pharmacy to obtain over-the-counter medication.
Examples of these types of drugs include acetaminophen which is marketed through various brand names including Tylenol.
These drugs could be effective in treating and managing minor pain episodes such as headaches, certain migraines and pain from cuts, bruising and other wounds.
There may be occasions that these over-the-counter medications may be inadequate for effectively managing certain types of pain.
In such cases, the advice and recommendations of qualified medical staff or pain clinic personnel would be required to obtain drugs or pain relief medications that are more appropriate for the type of pain being experienced.
Over-the-counter medications do have their use and despite being used to treat seemingly lower levels of pain, these types of medication do need to be consumed in the appropriate dosages.
A doctor may also recommend that these types of drugs be combined with some other types of drugs to provide more effective relief for pain and other conditions in the body.
2.
Prescription drugs.
These are drugs that require a prescription note from a doctor or other medically trained and usually licensed personnel.
Prescription drugs can be very powerful and usually have strict consumption guidelines.
There may be occasions where different drugs could begin to interact.
There may be some locations or cities where one drug that is only available by prescription in one city or location could be purchased through over-the-counter means in another location or city.
Examples of some drugs that might need a prescription include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs.
Corticosteroids are another type of drugs that can require a prescription from a doctor and these types of drugs could be used in addressing situations where there is severe inflammation.
Drugs that contain morphine may also be acquired with a prescription.
When using pain medications, it is important to adhere to the specific instructions regarding the drug.
This advice is useful for any type of drug and not simply drugs that are used in treating pain conditions.
There are pain clinics that could help you determine what type of medication would be adequate to treat your specific type of pain.
A pain clinic could also help you manage pain while using prescribed or over-the-counter medications.
