Caterpillar Injector Identification

    Model Number

    • The model number for Caterpillar injectors can be found in two places: stamped directly onto the part itself, and on the box that the part is packaged in. The model number is an alphanumeric number --- the length of the number varies by the part, but it's generally two letters and one digit long. An example of what a Caterpillar model number looks like is "D5T." The model number is used to identify what type of part it is. If the injector has a Caterpillar identification plate stamped on it, the model number is the number located in the top left-hand corner of the identification plate.

    Product Identification Number

    • To comply with construction industry standards, Caterpillar began using a Product Identification Number, or PIN, in 2000. This number is 17 alphanumeric digits long. Workers stamp the PIN either directly onto the injector or on the identification plate that's affixed to the outer casing of the injector. This PIN is required any time you need repairs, replacement parts or warranty information from Caterpillar regarding the injector.

    Serial Number

    • The Caterpillar serial number is made up of the last eight alphanumeric digits of the PIN number. You can identify a specific Caterpillar injector using this serial number. All Caterpillar serial numbers are unique. The serial number may either be stamped onto the outer casing of the injector or located on an identification plate. When Caterpillar uses an identification plate, it keeps all of the injector's identification information in one place; there's also another area on the plate where a serial number could be placed. If this slot for the serial number is filled in on the information plate, this isn't the correct serial number for your injector: Instead, it refers to the serial number for the engine.

    Bar Code

    • Caterpillar identification plates are equipped with a unique bar code. The bar code is located between the Product Identification Number and the area for additional identification notations on the bottom of the plate. The bar code is only present on the identification plate: It isn't printed directly onto the casing of the injector. The bar code may be scanned by the Caterpillar company to quickly and accurately identify the injector without entering the individual identification numbers into the Caterpillar computer system. This is a useful way of identifying a Caterpillar injector if the injector needs to be taken or shipped directly to Caterpillar for repairs.
