How to Relieve Sciatica Nerve Pain
- 1). Reduce the inflammation. Inflammation of the sciatic nerve is generally what causes sciatica nerve pain. Try using an ice pack to cool down your sciatic nerve. This should reduce the swelling in the sciatic nerve and reduce the pain that you feel. Anything cold should reduce the swelling.
- 2). Heat your sciatic nerve after you have cooled it down. Use a heating pad or anything warm to heat up the sciatic nerve. This is the same method that professional baseball pitchers use to treat their arms after pitching a game. The principle is the same for both cases. Cold and Heat will help nerves relax and reduce inflammation.
- 3). Stretch daily. Stretching daily will help relieve the muscles around the sciatic nerve and might help prevent inflammation of the sciatic nerve. Bend down from your waist and try to touch your toes. Hold for 30 seconds and repeat until you can touch your toes. Do NOT bounce when reaching down. Bouncing could tweak your muscles and cause the sciatic nerve to become irritated.
- 4). Take a pain reliever. Most pain relievers are also anti-inflammatory medications as well. You can get these over the counter at any pharmacy.
- 5). Consult a physician if the pain only worsens. If you have progressive weakness in the leg or an uncontrollable bladder then you need to seek a professional immediately. Sciatica nerve pain is a sign that there is a problem developing and should not be ignored.
