- 1). Decide on a name for your business. Add this name to your mailbox to receive mail; update your local post office with the additional name to your mailing address. Unlike other kinds of businesses, you will not need to rent office space to be a handyman. More than likely, your clients will prefer that you come to them.
- 2). Register your business at the local government business office. While you are there, inquire as to what other kinds of certificates you may need to do business as a handyman. Your city or state may require you to have a sales tax certificate and mandate that you charge your customers sales tax.
- 3). Ask your local government permits office if you are required to hold a contractor's license to be a handyman in your area. The laws vary from region to region. If you are required to get a contractor's license, then fill out the necessary paperwork to do so.
- 4). Consider obtaining a tax identification number for your business that is separate from your personal social security number. This may be necessary to obtain liability insurance for a contracting business. Consult your insurance agent and tax attorney to make an informed decision.
- 5). Acquire the necessary liability and business insurance you will need to work as a handyman. Most contractors and private customers will not hire you if you do not have the proper insurance.
- 6). Advertise in the local newspaper that you are ready for business with a small advertisement. Display your flyers on local community business boards and ask your friends and family to spread the word about your business. Word-of-mouth recommendations can be a great boost to your new business venture.
