How To Deal With Stress.
I do believe, though, that some modern stresses are greater than they have ever been historically. School children being pressured to not only pass their exams, but get good grades (even in my day we were allowed to enjoy our school days), those in jobs where they are subjected to regular €performance reviews€. €Oh My God, if I get a bad review they will probably sack me. How will I pay the mortgage?€, sour divorces, etc., etc., too little income, paying the bills. There are innumerable causes of stress.
So stress has been around for a long time. Knowing that does not help anybody. We still have to deal with it. In America, if you can afford it, you will rush off to see your €shrink€. I believe firmly in self help. We CAN help ourselves.
Effects of stress on individuals vary greatly; some climb down deep inside themselves, others get up and go - striving to work it out of their systems. Some become irritable and irascible, others become very quiet and introverted. And, of course, there are various levels in between these two. There are those who eat more and put on weight when stressed. There are those who lose interest in food and consequently lose weight. Some go into deep depression and find it incredibly difficult to snap out of it. There are those who try to drown their sorrows - alcohol is a commonly used tool, but it does not work. Whatever we do, it has an impact on those around us, our families and colleagues.
Stress management does require a degree of self-discipline. First thing to recognise is that stress has an immediate impact on one's immune system. Nerves start to jangle, sleep is broken, coughs, colds, €flu, skin disorders (psoriasis, dermatitis, various rashes and itches), cancer even and many more ailments are brought on as a direct result of stress impacting the immune system, making us more susceptible to these things.
