Live Your Life to the Full at a Retirement Community in Long Island

Today's senior citizens are no longer the stereotypical picture of old fogeys being driven around in golf carts wearing leisure suits, Hawaiian shirts, and comfortable orthopedic shoes.  This new "old" generation you see out there today are your parents, most of who were born during the baby boom period of 1946 to 1955. These are the people who choose to spend their Golden Years in active adult communities. Long Island residents who have just retired from the rat race avoid spending their day playing bridge and watching old movies of dead movie stars. Instead, they get out of the house, mingle with people of the same age, and live fit and healthy lifestyles.

If your folks are thinking retirement, don't assume they will be moving into a nursing home. That particular notion of retirement belongs to another generation entirely. Most of today's seniors came of age during a time of great political, cultural, and social upheaval: JFK Assassinated, the Vietnam War, the Cuban Missile Crisis, Woodstock, and Watergate. They listened to the sounds of the Beatles and the Beach Boys, experimented with mind-altering drugs, and were conditioned to be free spirited individuals. In short, they aren't your typical picture of senior citizens. They know what they want and what they want is to live the good life now.

This why a retirement community in Long Island is a good choice for New Yorkers who want to sell their huge houses and move into smaller living spaces. When faced with an empty nest, why even bother with the upkeep of maintaining and living in one?  This is why the Boomers as a demographic group have been under close observation for years and this is what was discovered.

Boomers are people always on the go, which is why they choose active adult communities. Long Island residents who are of this age (usually 60 and above) know exactly what they want to do and where they want to live. The following features must be present for them to move into this kind of housing.

Fitness centers are important for this group. The need to get on a treadmill and pump some iron is no longer relegated to the young. These guys want to remain fit and look good for as long as they can and getting a good daily workout is the secret to living a long and healthy life.

Walking trails are another feature they look for. While running is the in thing to do today, not everyone can do a 5k or 10k. This is why jogging paths have been replaced with trails for hiking and brisk walks in pleasant surroundings.

Security is another thing to check of on a Boomer's retirement list.  With so much drama going on in the world today, they want to feel safe and secure whenever they are in their new home. This is the reason why you see a proliferation of walls and gates in many of the new retirement developments that are going up.

Want to live the good life now? Then get off that rocking chair and into a community that lets you enjoy living and enjoying life to the full.
