How to Build a Reading Nook for Kids

    • 1). Replace the flooring in the area of the reading nook with a thick, comfortable carpet. While your kids may choose to sit on chairs while reading, they may also enjoy the floor for a change. A cozy, bright-colored carpet will appeal to younger children. Choose a microfiber carpet that is resistant to stains, especially if your children eat or drink while reading.

    • 2). Install bookshelves along at least two of the walls to give the area a true "nook" feeling. Remember that the bookshelves shouldn't too tall, as your children may have trouble reaching the upper shelves. If you have two kids, designate one bookshelf per child; in the event of more kids, allocate shelves for each child. Dark-colored bookshelves will help hide children's fingerprints.

    • 3). Install directional track lighting above the nook and aim the lights so that they fall in the different areas of the nook in which the children will choose to read. The lights should create a pleasant atmosphere for the children, while also serving the purpose of reducing eye strain. Bright halogen lights are ideal for this purpose.

    • 4). Place soft, comfortable seating such as a sofa and bean bag chairs in the reading nook. Your children will be more apt to read if they find the area comfortable, so soft seating and plenty of pillows will help make the area ideal for relaxing.
