Niagara gears up for record tourist visits in 2012. Bi-Centennial Commemoration of War of 1812
Commemoration and celebration of the War of 1812. Canadians will be asked to reflect on the meaning of long-past events, as the nation recalls the War of 1812. These memories will unfold in 2012 and beyond.
Would Uncle Sam's borders have encompassed all of North America if the USA had achieved its territorial aims in the War of 1812? It's arguable that Canada would never had come into existence.
Certainly Americans regard that conflict as an essential assertion of their sovereignty at a time when their country was emerging onto the world stage. Canada has invested significant infrastructural funds to commemorate this bi-centennial. It sees the bicentennial as a time for Canadians to celebrate their national legend. Its initiatives have been welcomed by local governments in the Great Lakes region.
In Toronto enthusiasm for historical reenactment is also live because of its potential to boost tourist interest. Toronto is the home of Fort York. Then the parliament of Canada, the settlement was razed by bombarding American vessels. Later in the War a similar price was exacted of the Americans.
