Virginia State Veterans Benefits
- Veterans certified as totally and permanently disabled by the VA may receive lifetime hunting and fishing licenses issued by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries for $10.
- The Virginia Military Survivors and Dependents Program allows dependents of military personnel killed or missing in action or those who became a minimum of 90-percent disabled from service-related causes to qualify for educational benefits. This program waives fees and tuition at any public college or university in Virginia for eligible spouses or children. While there is no spousal age limit, children must be between 16 and 29 years old for benefit eligibility. The armed forces member must have resided in Virginia at the time of entering military service or lived in the state for the prior five years before a spouse or child applies for the VMSDEP.
- Veterans in need of nursing home care may qualify for admission to the Virginia Veterans Care Center in Roanoke. The VVCC mission is providing high-quality yet affordable care to veterans and their spouses. Adjacent to the Salem VA Medical Center, the VVCC has various on-site health care services, including a dental clinic, X-ray laboratory, physical and respiratory therapy and podiatry services. Amenities include nature trails, chapel, library, barbershop, woodworking shop, billiard room and convenience store.
- Veterans and their spouses may be buried at one of the three state veterans cemeteries, located in Amelia, Radford and Suffolk. Veterans are buried at no charge, but as of 2011, the spousal burial fee is $300. Interment includes grave site assignment, opening and closing of the grave, a federally provided grave marker and perpetual care. Veterans and spouses may choose from ground burial with casket, cremation ground burial or placement or cremation placement in a Columbarium Niche.
