Instructions on Making Log Beds

    • 1). Cut one end of each 20-inch log at a 45-degree angle with your miter saw. Do not alter the original length. These are the corner posts for your log bed.

    • 2). Cut both ends of each 75-inch log at a 45-degree angle. The original length must not be altered, and the cuts should slant toward each other. The log should resemble the shape of a trapezoid.

    • 3). Lay two 20-inch logs parallel, 67 inches apart, with their slanted cuts facing each other. Position a 75-inch log perpendicularly between them so the slanted cuts are against each other. You should have a 75-by-20-inch rectangle with one missing side. Screw the 75-inch log to the 20-inch logs. Use four screws for this task, and repeat this process with the last 20-inch logs and 75-inch log.

    • 4). Set the 20-inch logs upright, so they stand on their flat ends. The 75-inch logs should be parallel, and spaced 39 inches apart. Drill a 2-inch deep, 3/8-inch diameter hole through a 20-inch log that is perpendicular to the 75-inch log and parallel with the ground. This is a pilot hole, and should be 8 inches above the ground. Repeat this process on the other 20-inch log that is 39 inches away.

    • 5). Position a 4-by-39-inch log between the 20-inch logs that have the holes. It should be 6 inches above the ground. Screw through the holes and into the center of the log. Screw another 4-by-39-inch log to the 20-inch logs in the same manner so it is 4 inches above the first. Repeat this and previous step on the other end of your bed frame.

    • 6). Drill six 2-inch-deep pilot holes into each of the 75-inch logs. The holes should be perpendicular to the logs, parallel with the ground, and on the outside of the bed frame. Space them 12 inches apart. Position 2-by-39-inch logs perpendicularly between the 75-inch logs, so their 1-inch centers are aligned with the pilot holes. Screw through the holes and into the logs.

    • 7). Sand the entire bed frame, wipe it clean with your tack cloth and apply your wood stain. Let the stain dry according to instructions.

    • 8). Set your mattress on top of the frame so the sides of the mattress are flush with the sides of the log bed frame.
