Why Anyone Would Chose FUT Hair Transplant Over FUE?

The FUT strip procedure involves removing a thin strip of skin from the patient's back of the scalp  to extract the subjective hair follicles, stuck in that skin. The strip excision leaves wound opening about 2mm wide and stretching from the back of one ear across the other. This wound is closed and sutured that leaves a fine line scar to be hidden underneath top layers of hair.

In general, ideal candidates for hair transplant surgery, be it FUT or FUE, are qualified to be generally healthy individuals. Ideal candidates of FUT
  • Patients who have sufficient donor supply
  • Patients who have a flexible scalp
  •  Patients who have a good skin tolerance to scarring and bruising

Benefits of FUT

The best benefit of the FUT is that it allows open dissection with the skin strip put under microscopic vision to remove the hair follicles. This allows the maximum rate of graft survival.

The amount of time required to prepare and store the grafts outside the body is limited which makes way less trauma for the grafts that leads to better potential hair growth after the transplantation.

The most even quality hair grafts can be extracted with this procedure which makes an even density and very natural results.

One 7hour day case session of FUT can have a complete hair restoration of up to 3,000 grafts, which is substantial for full head coverage of dense hair. The one time session is less hazardous than coming back again for more sessions.

The FUT procedure is cheaper than the FUE procedure since it requires lesser stress and time to complete.

The Donor Zone

The Donor zone of the back of the scalp is required to be well flexible so that when about a 2mm or wider skin is removed, the skin laxity can compensate the tissue removal, without causing tension or tightness. Some patients are sensitive to scarring, that even if they have a flexible skin in the scalp, they can develop bumpy scars.

Surgeons examine the skin type and texture of the patient's scalp before qualifying them as ideal candidates. And even if the patients opt for FUT and develop bumpy scarring, it can be fixed with a scar fixing procedure.

The Donor Scar

It is usually aimed for the donor scar to be unremarkable under top layers of hair. However, when the patient wishes to wear their short or just that the patients has an already thin hair density, that the scar is visible, then the scar might cause a problem.

There are number newly advanced techniques of FUT donor closing and suturing that makes the scarring issue very fine even with short cropped or thin density hair.

Single blade incision technique works with a single line incision that works very minimal invasively. The Trichophytic closure technique has a very systematic and precise suturing technique using staples or absorbable sutures that it allows the growth of hair through the scar.
