Hardware Used to Make a Door

One of the things that makes a door complete is the hardware.
Hardware includes just about everything that isn't crafted from wood.
This means that hinges, handles, locksets, clavos, and even wrought iron grilles are considered hardware.
Knowing what you need for each door can make designing it that much easier.
Certain pieces of hardware are more appropriate for some doors than others.
For example, if you intend to get a door for the interior of your home, then you aren't likely to worry too much about locksets.
This is because you won't need a door that actually locks.
A dummy lock should be sufficient for your needs.
Dummy locks will keep the door shut so you have privacy when you need it, and a door that isn't hanging in the way (such as for a closet).
This particular lockset is an easy choice, allowing you to move onto other hardware decisions.
The same can be said when choosing the metal used for your hardware.
If you intend to get an exterior door, then you should be aware of how some metals can weather.
While quality manufacturers will give their metal hardware pieces the best protection possible, over the years, protection can wear down and the metal will be exposed to the elements.
Brass is one of these metals - it is often given a protective lacquer, but after the lacquer begins to wear away, it is best if it is stripped off completely and the brass allowed to weather evenly.
Weathering will change the colors of many metals and if you need them to be a certain color in order to match with the rest of your home, then this should be something to take into consideration.
There are other elements as well that you may or may not need to take a look at.
Clavos are decorative nails that are used to accent doors, and are particularly popular in certain architectural styles, such as Tudor doors.
Climate control pieces, such as sills, sweeps, and weatherstrips are also important to consider - especially for exterior doors.
They can help to keep your home at the right temperature and keep you from using more heat or air conditioning than you need.
If you have other ideas or questions about hardware, you should contact the manufacturer.
Many will offer a lot of various hardware options that allow you to customize your door in the best way possible.
That way you have a unique door exactly the way you want it.
