How to Make Pom Poms & Tassels Out of Yarn

    • 1). Cut two identical shapes from the cardboard. Cut two doughnut circles with a hole in the center for making a pom pom. Cut two rectangles for making a tassel. The larger the shapes, the larger your pom pom or tassel will be.

    • 2). Cut two very long pieces of yarn and two short ones. Sandwich a short piece of yarn between each set of shapes, with the ends hanging out about 2 inches. In the case of the circle, the yarn must form a loop inside of the sandwich with the ends coming out at the same place. In the case of the rectangles, the yarn should lay width-wise between the cardboard.

    • 3). Begin to wrap the yarn around the cardboard sandwich. If making a pom pom, wrap the yarn around the doughnut ring again and again, going through the center hole. If making a tassel, wrap the yarn around the cardboard lengthwise over and over until you come to the end of it. In both cases, cut more yarn and keep wrapping the cardboard sandwich until you have reached the desired thickness. The more often you wrap the yarn around the cardboard, the thicker your pom pom or tassel will be.

    • 4). Press the doughnut flat on a table and carefully snip through all of the loops of yarn along the outer edge of the circle. To finish the pom pom, carefully pull up the center yarn and tie it around all of the yarn pieces making a very tight knot. Remove the cardboard circles and save them to reuse to make more pom poms. Fluff the pom pom to form a ball. Trim any uneven yarn ends .

    • 5). Pull the short yarn up from within the middle of the rectangle sandwich and tie it firmly around the loops of yarn on one end. These two yarn ends can be used later to attach the tassel to clothing, etc. Cut the yarn loops along the opposite edge of the cardboard to free them. To finish the tassel, cut another length of yarn and wrap it around the neck of the tassel five to 10 times. Tie a knot with the ends to secure them. Trim the loose ends of the tassel, if desired.
