How to Change the Color of Your Cabinets

    • 1). Use a screwdriver or drill to remove the kitchen cabinet doors so you can paint on a flat surface. Tape over hardware such as hinges or pulls to protect them from being painted. Alternately, you can remove them and replace them once the paint has dried.

    • 2). Protect any areas you do not want to paint. If your cabinet boxes are mounted to the wall, tape the walls and surrounding areas with painter's tape to protect them from paint. Cover the countertops with plastic drop cloths to protect them from drips.

    • 3). Use a palm sander to prepare your cabinets for painting. Sanding gives you a smooth, even finish to work with, and it roughs up the surface to help the paint adhere properly. If the cabinets have existing paint that is difficult to remove with sandpaper, try using a chemical paint stripper.

    • 4). Paint following the direction of the wood grain, if your cabinets not have visible wood grains. If not, paint in a uniform pattern to decrease the amount of brush strokes visible once the paint has dried. Use rollers or wide brushes to cover the larger surface areas and thinner angled brush to paint trim.

    • 5). Allow the paint to dry fully, and do as many coats as you need to get the coverage you want. If imperfections are apparent, you might need to sand again and start over. Once your paint is dried and you are happy with the results, replace the doors and hardware.
