America"s Obsession With Thin Does Not Reflect Reality
In today's news there was information about a model that had posed for the legendary designer Ralph Lauren whose image had been Photoshopped.
The model was so emaciated that every one who saw the image knew that the model really could not be that thin.
The picture caused a major ruckus because a certain blog site poked fun at the picture.
As a consequence of the critique of the image the designer threatened to sue this company for improper use of one of its trademarked images.
Because the blog was situated outside of the United States there was nothing that the designer could do to have the image taken down.
It just added more scorn to the situation.
All of these images that are projected in fashion magazines are with women who are super slim.
Many of them are size zeros or twos which simply does not reflect the real body type of the American woman.
The reality is that two-thirds of all American women are overweight or obese.
There is a major disconnect between what is reflected in these fashion magazines and the reality of the woman walking down the street.
All of these images tend to demoralize American women because they cannot live up to the standard of the model that they see on the cover of each of these fashion magazines.
There is no doubt that being overweight and obese in this country is a major problem that needs to be dealt with on a large-scale basis, however looking at the weight of the models on these magazines leads one to believe they are actually starving themselves to create their look.
It is simply unnatural to be so thin that they must be depriving themselves of proper nutrition.
If only the fashion magazines that women revered were based more on reality then there would not be as much of an issue with eating disorders in this country.
Being overweight or obese is dangerous to your health, but also being anorexic or bulimic it is just as dangerous if not more so.
