    Bleeding Heart

    • Pink dwarf bleeding heart (Dicentra eximia) is a perennial wildflower that is hardy in USDA zones 3 through 9. Native to the eastern United States, it can be found growing wild in the forests, rocky woods and ledges of the Appalachian Mountains. Pink dwarf grows to a height and width of 1 to 1 1/2 feet. The foliage is gray-green and deeply lobed with multiple fine points along the edges. The flowers are pink to pale burgundy and heart shaped with dark inner petals that hang down from the center of the flower, resembling a drop of blood. In cool northern climates, blooming lasts from late spring through the end of summer. In warm southern climates, the plant usually stops blooming in July when temperatures get hot but may bloom again in September or October when the weather cools. Pink dwarf should be planted in a moist, partially shady location.

    Wild Petunia

    • Wild petunia (Ruellia humilis), also referred to as hairy wild petunia, grows in the woods, glades, prairies and fields throughout most of the eastern half of the United States. A hardy perennial in USDA zones 4 through 8, these plants grow to a height and width of 1 1/2 to 2 feet. The light green stems and foliage are covered with tiny white hairs. It begins blooming in early summer and continues until late summer. The funnel-shaped light purple flowers last only one day, opening in the morning and falling off the plant in the evening. Wild petunias can be grown in average soil that drains well with either a full sun or part shade exposure.

    Lanceleaf Coreopsis

    • Lanceleaf or sand coreopsis (Coreopsis lanceolata), commonly called lanceleaf tickseed, is a perennial that grows wild throughout most of North America in fields, prairies and along roadsides. It is hardy in USDA zones 4 through 9. The medium green leaves are elongated and about 6 inches long. Bright yellow 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 inch flowers bloom on 2 foot long stiff stems throughout the summer and last a week when cut for flower arrangements. Lanceleaf tickseed grows best in a sunny or partially sunny location with nutrient poor soil.
