Walls, Windows and Floors

• Turn a plain Jane room into a Tuscan villa by making over the walls, windows and floors. You can go grand and add architectural elements that recall Tuscany, such as arches, big-picture windows (with garden views), sconces and columns. Warm up your walls with a coat of buttery yellow paint or doll up an accent wall with a faux finish in a light earth tone. Floors look beautiful in stained wood or terracotta tile. Windows are emphasized in Tuscan kitchen decor, because natural light and the outdoors are brought inside as much as possible. Use no window coverings or sheers that allow light to spill inside. Hang leafy plants around entrances or plant a wildflower garden in sight of the kitchen window.
  
  

Furniture

• Tuscan kitchen decor is about the big, bold and robust. Natural materials, especially wood, are the favorites for cabinets, shelves, cupboards and islands. Finishes tend to be timeworn and rustic as opposed to sleek or glossy. Invest in a signature Tuscany-inspired piece, like a wooden farmhouse table or a cupboard with wrought iron hardware. Hang floating shelves to create open display areas for showing off beautiful wine bottles or a basket of bread.
  
  

Accessories

• Use accessories to show off Tuscan craftsmanship. Italian Majolica pottery is a classic, with its bold yellows, blues and reds set against antique white, creating the ideal Tuscan palette. Use food and wine as accessories as well, such as setting ripe fruit in an earthenware bowl or a selection of cheese on a wooden cutting board. Wildflowers and leafy herbs bring more of the natural world indoors. Display them in old glass bottles, espresso cups, bowls or tin buckets.
