In Texas, politics have played an important part in recent years as there is a large amount of support for both the political parties present in the United States government.
Before 1990, the Democratic Party used to be the dominant force in the region but its popularity has waned in recent years along with an increase in the following of the Republican Party to the point that, after the 2008 elections, they hold all of the state offices in Texas and also have a majority among the members of the Texas congressional delegation.
In the state legislature, the Republican Party also controls both the houses as well.
However it should be noted that although the Republic Party has more support in Texas as a whole, there are certain areas that are still dominated by the supporters of the Democratic Party.
Austin, the capital of Texas, is a very important center of support for the Democratic Party and it is responsible for most of the progress of political activism in the area.
Support for the Democratic Party also comes from the cities of San Antonio along with Dallas and Houston.
However the suburbs of these cities consist of citizens who mainly support the Republic Party.
Government elections in Texas have generally face low voter turnouts as compared to other states and the reason for this is that there is an old belief among mostly the rural residents that a person should manage his affairs himself and should not need any external assistance in them.
This concept has been decreasing in popularity in the past few years as since the 2000 elections, the voter turnouts have constantly been increasing.
The elections of 2008 registered the highest voter turnout to date and this has proved the trend of increasing political awareness.
