How to Know if I Have a Tax Garnish
- 1). Contact your bank. Call the customer service number listed on the back of your debit card or monthly bank statement. Provide the representative with information he requests to identify you and access your account. Then ask the representative if a tax agency or any other entity is garnishing your taxes. If a garnishment is in effect ask the representative for a contact number for the agency requesting the garnishment.
- 2). Call the government agency that could have a reason to garnish your bank account or wages if your bank doesn’t have any information for you. Contact the Internal Revenue Service at 800-829-1040. Provide your Social Security number for assistance. Call your public library for contact numbers for other government tax agencies. If the tax agency has issued a garnishment ask about your rights in the process and how you can end the garnishment.
- 3). Ask your employer about wage garnishment if you want more information. Contact the payroll department and explain that you are resolving some tax issues and want to know if a garnishment order is currently in effect for you.
