Three Strategies to Get Started out with Learning Sweep Picking
Sweep Picking, on the list of the hardest, and yet most rewarding techniques that guitarists wish to tackle. This is an extremely hard technique to start learning but with these three tips, you could start to train right, and really go head first into sweep picking.
First of all, you'll need a good metronome. This is the basic step with any kind of practice, whether is be guitar, piano, violin, or whatever instrument you play, you'll need a metronome. The real key to great playing is through practicing slowly. When you are learning a brand new scale, you will need a metronome, should you be studying a whole new arpeggio, you want a metronome, keep in mind you must use a metronome!
What we are going to do is choose a basic three-string sweep. You will pick any notes that you prefer, just make sure on the three high strings. Make sure you play those three notes at a slow speed to build your fingers. Then fire up the metronome to 60 bpm, and have fun with playing one note per click.
The other step is holding your pick correctly. You'll want to be sure that your pick is held perfectly flat, parallel with the floor. This is crucial because you do not want your pick rocking backwards and forwards. This enables you to pick each note to allow them to be heard nice and clearly.
This tip needs a lots of practice to gain access to the muscles memory. This is the reason why we practice slowly, you have to give full attention to being sure your fingers as well as your pick are plucking the notes perfectly, and also that everything rings out. Then when practicing along with your metronome, go slow until perfect, at least 5 times one after the other, then bump up the metronome.
The final tip is on muting your notes. The obvious way to mute the notes is as simple as lifting up each finger on the left hand after playing the note. So once you play the first note and it rings out, lift up that finger and pluck the next note making sure that the prior note is silenced.
Just as before, this just needs a large amount of practice to get in order, and I also realize that this can be a lot to try to get, these are the beginning tricks on sweep picking. Just be sure you practice extremely slowly, this is the biggest tip that you can get! Practice is not going to make perfect. SLOW practice makes perfect.
