How Long Does It Take Latex Paint to Dry?
- Most latex paints applied at room temperature will be dry enough to touch in one hour. However, you should wait four to six hours before applying another coat of paint.
- Greater air circulation equals shorter drying time. Circulation can be increased by using fans on a low setting or turning on ceiling fans. If it's warm outside, open any windows.
- The colder the room is, the longer it will take for latex paint to dry.
- The lower the humidity, the faster latex paint dries. Humidity is essentially water in the air, and water inhibits the drying process.
- Paint that's applied thickly takes longer to dry. Two or more thin coats are better than one thick coat.
- Try this test an hour or two after painting. Place your hand on a painted surface that you know for certain is dry. Note how warm it feels. Then place your hand on the newly painted surface. If it feels colder to the touch, it's not dry.
