• In addition to decks and siding, the wood-tone and semi-solid stains are appropriate for fences, trim or any other exterior pressure-treated wood. The semi-transparent acrylic stain is preferable for siding, shingles, shakes, fences and roofs.

• Cabot Wood Toned Deck and Siding Stain is available in five wood-tone shades. Cabot Semi-Solid Deck and Siding Stain and Cabot Semi-Transparent Acrylic Stain are each available in 74 different colors and wood tones. Benefits

• These products are deep penetrating and water repellent, according to Cabot. Keeping moisture away prevents mildew and warping, more common if the wood is exposed to a lot of sun and/or dampness. Only the semi-solid deck stain and the acrylic deck stain are described as having UV protection, which may be more preferable for areas that receive a lot of exposure to sunlight.
  
  

Features

• The three stains require only one coat to provide a good seal, according to the manufacturer. Re-staining is suggested every one to two years, depending on exposure to elements and wear.
  
  

Time Frame

• The finish of Cabot Wood Toned Deck and Siding Stain weathers over time to the natural wood hue of the stain selected, though this hue may vary slightly depending on the wood to which it is applied. Many stores offer samples of the manufacturer's stain colors applied to several types of wood. Both Cabot Semi-Solid Deck and Siding Stain and Cabot Semi-Transparent Acrylic Stain remain true to its color, thought it may fade over time, especially if the wood is not re-stained every year or two as recommended.
  
  

Considerations

• Cabot Wood Toned Deck and Siding Stain and Cabot Semi-Solid Deck and Siding stain are primarily oil based. The Semi-Transparent Acrylic Stain is water based. Water-based paints and stains are much easier to clean up and have less environmental impact; however, acrylic stains do not generally hold up as well as oil based, depending on exposure to the elements.
