How to Caulk Around Your Crown Molding

    • 1). Position the ladder under the crown molding, and prepare to climb up and down the ladder as you move the ladder along the wall to caulk the crown molding. Use white caulk on white crown molding, or look for a color of caulk that closely resembles the color of the crown molding. Tan and clear are other common caulk colors, but some home improvement or paint stores may carry custom colors.

    • 2). Cut through the smallest scored line on the nozzle of the caulk, using a utility knife. A small incision will give you a narrow beaded line, and after you have tested the beaded line on the crown molding, you can always cut the nozzle a bit more to make the caulk bead wider.

    • 3). Run a length of caulk along the top of the crown molding where it meets the ceiling. Dip an index finger into a cup of water and stroke the wet finger along the length of caulk you have just laid. You can also use a damp paper towel for this procedure. The wiping pushes the caulk into the small gap between the molding and the wall, ensuring a tight seal. This step is also messy, so wipe your hands with a work rag as you work in sections.

    • 4). Move along the wall, caulking and wiping excess caulk off, in increments of about 3 feet at a time. When you have completed the caulking on the top side of the crown molding, repeat the process for the bottom half of the crown molding to ensure a consistent appearance.
