Libraries provide a wealth of resources to children and adults. These warehouses of informative material provide free and easy access to educational and entertaining reading options. Each year, students across the country celebrate National Library Week. The exact dates for this holiday vary annually, but it commonly falls in April. There are a number of creative and engaging bulletin boards that teachers can prepare to remind their students of the benefits of libraries during this week of library appreciation.

    Love My Library T-Shirt Design

    • Create a clothesline full of "library love" T-shirts to celebrate library week. To build this bulletin board, cover your board surface with blue bulletin board paper or cloud print fabric. String yarn or twine from one side of the board to the other to create a clothesline. Ask students to create clothes to fill the clothesline by decorating an "I Love My Library" T-shirt. Present students with paper T-shirt outlines, and allow them to fill the garment with pictures and words that express why they are so fond of their local book-lender. Instruct students to cut out their T-shirts. Then provide students with clothespins and allow them to place their shirt on the bulletin board laundry line.

    Build a Librarian

    • Librarians are a vital part of any library. Ask your students to consider the usefulness of, and show their appreciation for, their local librarian by creating a "Build a Librarian" bulletin board. To begin this bulletin board, ask students to think of physical and mental traits of a good librarian. Create a list of student suggestions on the chalk board. After building your list, explain to students that they need to create a librarian who possesses some or all of the listed traits. Allow students to use whatever medium they wish, including markers, paint or even collage. Provide all students with paper, and instruct them to build their librarians. Display the students' librarian images on the classroom bulletin board.

    Library Etiquette Posters

    • While the library is a wonderful place to be, it is also a place where rules must be followed. Engage students in an exploration of library etiquette rules by creating a bulletin board display. Before you start the activity, explain the concept of etiquette to students. Discuss etiquette that they may use in every day life, like holding the door open for someone, so that they can understand the concept clearly. After concluding your basic etiquette conversation, move on to discussing the specific rules individuals must follow while in the library. Allow students to raise their hand and volunteer rules that they know from their personal experience. List these suggestions on the board. Once you have a comprehensive list, instruct students to use items from this list to create a library etiquette poster. Provide students with paper and art supplies, and allow them to make their informative and attention-getting posters. Place the posters on the bulletin board.

Once you are done with these posters, offer them to the local library. It may want to hang these handmade reminders in the library to serve as a refresher to patrons.
