How to Fix a Hoover U5491-900 With No Suction Power
- 1). Turn off the Hoover power switch and disconnect the power cord. Check the bag to make sure it's not full. A full bag will affect the suction power of the unit. Replace the bag as you would normally.
- 2). Grab the hose where it connects to the back of the Hoover U5491-900 dirt duct with your hand, if there is no suction from the hose. Twist the end of the hose counterclockwise, and pull it away from the vacuum. Pull out any debris buildup at the dirt duct.
- 3). Take the hose outside or over a bathtub, and remove any dirt and hair buildup inside the hose. Hold the hose vertically and shake it vigorously to dislodge debris. Do not run water through the hose. Reconnect the vacuum end of the hose to the dirt duct, and twist it clockwise to reattach the hose to the vacuum.
- 4). Push the step release on the back of the Hoover vacuum head with your foot and lower the handle to the floor, if you do not have suction from the vacuum head or hose after cleaning the hose.
- 5). Turn the vacuum over so the agitator brush roll is facing you. Remove the four screws securing the bottom plate to the vacuum head with a Phillips-head screwdriver. The four screws are at the four corners of the plate surrounding the agitator brush roll. Lift the bottom plate off the unit.
- 6). Grasp the agitator brush roll at both ends, and lift it out of the vacuum head. Pull the belt off the motor spindle and away from the agitator roll. If the belt is worn or broken, replace it with Hoover belt part number 38528-033.
- 7). Clear the opening on the back of the agitator brush roll cavity. Any debris will pull out with your fingertip. Place the belt around the motor spindle and around the channel on the agitator brush roll. Insert the agitator brush roll into the cavity in the vacuum head. Place the bottom plate back into position and secure with the retaining screws.
- 8). Turn the Hoover over so the top of the vacuum is facing you. Push the handle back into the upright position.
