A scarf is a piece of fabric that is worn around the neck, head or waist for purposes of warmth, fashion or religion.Scarves come in a variety of fabrics, the most famous being the silk scarves, the cashmere scarves and the printed scarves.

From the point of utility, scarves were not used to keep warm. They were originally worn by men around their neck. Soon however, women started using the scarves.

These silk scarves, popularly known as Aviator Scarves, later became very popular with both men and women. And with the popularity came the experiments to make the silk scarves fashionably attractive. One of these experiments was to embellish silk scarves with beads or jewels. Usually, the design is sparse and only a sprinkling of these decorative elements is made. The reason for this is that silk is quite a delicate fabric and can rarely withstand the additional weight imposed by the beads. However, a little bit of sparkle goes a long way. Another luxurious style of silk scarf is one that is painted by hand. They usually cost more than the average article of clothing because of the workmanship that goes into them.

A cashmere scarf on the other hand, is a length of fabric made from special wool from a goat that is native to the Kashmir. These cashmere scarves are known for their bright colours and for their elaborate embroidery with intricate style. It is warm, it is fashionable and it is attractive.

By the 19th century the scarf became a real fashion accessory and by the mid of the 20th century it became a closet essential that led to versatility in clothing designs. The further popularity of the scarves and especially silk scarves can be credited to the various fashion houses like Hermes, Dior, Chanel or Prada which made the silk scarf as an iconic fashion statement.

The popular acceptance of scarves has opened a whole new world to the designers and creative artists. Scarves were now decorated with intricate designs, and famous scenes or locations now started finding their way into the motif of the scarves like the famous Bareilly Bazaar of India or Celtic designs or zodiac motifs.
